The story of zombies is not yet complete, and the truth can be more horrifying than suspected. Some victims are lucky they simply die a gruesome death on someone’s meal plan or their consciousness flickers out, and they become a mindless eater of living flesh. The true horrors are reserved for those who survive the zombie's bite and awaken to remember all that they were, even as their curse makes them feast.

Julian is not a particularly lucky fellow.

Follow his descent into the most ancient shadows of night and history. He discovers what's hiding within and struggles to remember what humanity can mean for someone who keeps leaving his on the far side of last night’s dinner.

This sometimes irreverent, once in a while funny, and often horrific story is about the struggle to cling to a sliver of something other than what those unlucky become, a journey beyond death and humanity, to find a path out of fear and revulsion. It is more than a story of the not quite dead, yet.

The Dead Repent A Zombie Story eBook Stephen Ullom

They say there are only two basic plots that all fiction follows: a stranger comes to town or someone goes on a journey. In The Dead Repent: A Zombie’s Story, author Steve Ullom deftly combines both themes to create an absolutely delightful (yes, delightful!) compelling and really beautifully written story. Ullom’s protagonist, (his victims might prefer the moniker antagonist!) Julian, finds himself a stranger in a new and mysterious world of zombies, half-humans, and just plain ol’ folk. Each time he arrives at a new destination, he continues to follow his own journey of finding love while shedding his second skin of zombie-hood. Unlike most fictional human meat eaters, the suit, the appetite and all the ensuing blood and gore, just don’t fit Julian. He knows it, as do the priest, the old man, and the ingenue he meets along the way (what would any zombie book be without a little love at first bite?) Julian’s journey is to find his true nature (and a good appetite suppresant) while keeping up his delightful sense of humor. Or perhaps that wonderful quality belongs to Author Ullom who writes beautifully, whether it be descriptions of forests, moods, longings for love, or even the old zombie BBQ. In all honesty, this is not a genre I’ve ever read or would gravitate to. But I’ve become a fan of the author’s poetry and haikus on Twitter and so I thought I’d give this book a try. Who knew a tale of teeth, human remains and the quest for redemption and love could be told through the eyes of a fun and funny zombie with a conscience? Buy this book and enjoy it … perhaps over a dinner of Pinot and steak tartar.

The Dead Repent A Zombie Story eBook Stephen Ullom Reviews

Who doesn't love a good zombie romance? Wait a second, is that a new genre? If not, it oughta be because Steve Ullom's "The Dead Repent" is just that, a romantic story about zombies who have heart. Now, I didn't say "a heart," none of the undead have that. However when Julian gets bitten, another zombie saves him, and compels the newly-diseased, flesh-eater to try to suppress his desires. The author takes Julian on a Canterbury journey, replete with a priest, a maiden, some poetry, and a fluid writing style. Oh, and then there are those other zombies, the ones who smell and whose arms drop off randomly, written with pure horror as they feed. In this regard, Ullom certainly hits the mark, drawing the reader into a world so clearly defined and colorfully imagistic. For zombie lovers, and anyone who likes a tension-filled romance, this is the one to read.
An unexpected tale that fearlessly explores life issues relevant to--apparently--humans and zombies alike. I especially appreciated the author's confident ability to range beyond the ordinary and create a story for which there is no need to repent!
“I checked my chest, so strong was the perception of a heartbeat, but I felt nothing.” What does it mean to have heart, or a heartbeat for that matter? Find out when you read The Dead Repent A Zombie's Story, by Stephen Ullom. It is an excellent read that will keep you on the edge of your chair. In this tale you will be introduced to a different type of zombie culture – a culture where moral and theological concepts are considered from the point of view of a zombie. Ullom achieves this through his very relatable character, Julian. Make no mistake - this novel does contain what one would expect from a story about zombies, horrifying scenes and mindless destruction but it also lets Julian show his vulnerable side through humor and self-reflection. I highly recommend it!
